The Narrative Style
Romeo and Juliet is a classic example of the narrative style, where characters are introduced, there's a dramatic take-off and allies and enemies are gained. The style reaches a dramatic point (the climax), where there's a resolution, for good or for bad. Romeo and Juliet goes back and forth between who is an ally and who is an enemy, as well as the protagonists and antagonists. We will be discussing this style and points in depth throughout the project.

These terms will be useful for you to explore.

Synopsis (English)
The story opens with fighting on the streets of Nuuk between the Johansen's and the Kleist's. No one is killed, but these are bad times in Nuuk. Anguti (Johansen), who is in love with Orsina, is convinced by his friends Benvolio and Mercutio to go to a Kleist party at Manhattan. At this party, he meets Juliette (Kleist), kisses her, and immediately falls in love with her. Anguti later finds out that she’s a Kleist. He decides he loves her anyway and they confess their love for each other on a balcony at the Hans Egede Hotel, where they agree to secretly marry the next day. Friar Laurence, a friend of Anguti, disagrees with such young love but marries them anyway in the hope the marriage will bring peace to Nuuk. Later that day, Tybalt (Kleist), angry from Anguti crashing the Kleist' party at Manhattan, finds Mercutio and Anguti on the streets of Nuuk. He challenges them to a fight, which Anguti tries to stop as he's now a relative of Tybalt. Mercutio is killed, and in anger, Anguti kills Tybalt. The Mayor of Nuuk sends Anguti into exile to Sisimiut. Juliette's nurse tells Juliette that Anguti is exiled, and that she must marry Paris. Distressed, Juliette goes to Friar Laurence, who tells her to drink a potion that will make her appear dead. He'll send a letter to Anguti telling him of the plan. Afraid, Juliette drinks the potion. The Kleist's think their daughter is dead and bury her. The letter never reaches Anguti. Thinking Juliette is dead, Anguti buys poison and comes to Nuuk. Paris visits Juliette's grave, where he hides when Anguti approaches. Thinking Anguti has come to disturb the Kleist' family grave, he challenges Anguti to a duel. Anguti kills Paris. Anguti kisses Juliette one last time, drinks the poison and dies. Juliette wakes up and realizes what has happened. She tries to drink the same poison but there's none left. She kisses Anguti one last time and stabs herself with Anguti dagger. The Johansen' and the Kleist' families find their dead children and agree to end their fighting.

Synopsis (Dansk)
Borgmesteren i Nuuk sender Anguti i eksil i Sisimiut. Juliette drikker giften i angst.

Prologue
(Lights down.)

NARRATOR: (English) Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Nuuk, where we lay our scene.
From ancient grudge, break to new mutiny.
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes,
A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life.

Scene 1 – Day One – Sunday Morning

NARRATOR: (English) The peace on the streets of Nuuk has been disturbed. Another fight has broken out between the Johansen's and the Kleist's, two powerful families who have fought each other for as long as anyone can remember.

(MERCUTIO and ANGUTI enter, stage left.)

MERCUTIO: Come, Anguti! Let's go and see what's happening.

ANGUTI: I can't. I miss Orsina. Is love a tender thing? Is it too rough, too rude, too boisterous and it pricks like a thorn?

MERCUTIO: If love is rough with you, be rough with love. Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down.

ANGUTI: You speak the truth, Mercutio.

BENVOLIO: Forget Orsina. The Kleist's are having a masquerade party tonight. Let's crash it!

ANGUTI: Jeg tror jeg bliver hjemme. Sofa Aapalortoq vises I aften.

(ANGUTI and MERCUTIO and KLEIST'S look wearily at each other but eventually begin to dance. ANGUTI and JULIETTE slowly work their way toward each other. They're completely taken with each other.)

JULIETTE: (to NURSE) Go ask his name.

NURSE: His name is Anguti, and a Johansen, the only son of your great enemy.

JULIETTE: My only love sprung from my only hate!

(Exit JOHANSEN'S, stage left. Exit KLEIST'S, stage right.)

JULIETTE: O Anguti, Anguti! Wherefore art thou, Anguti?.

JULIETTE: Deny your father and your family's name, or if you will not, if you swear your love to me, I will no longer be a Kleist.

ANGUTI (To AUDIENCE): Say what!?!?

JULIETTE :What's in a name? What we call a rose, by any other name, would smell as sweet.

ANGUTI: I take you, Juliette, at your word. Say you love me, and I'll be new baptised.

JULIETTE (surprised and frightened): Who's there?

ANGUTI: It's me.

(ANGUTI appears in the light.)

JULIETTE: Anguti! What are you doing here?!? If my family catches you, you'll be killed on the spot!

ANGUTI: I'll take my chances to see you again. I love you! Jeg elsker dig! Asavakkit!

(ANGUTI climbs up onto balcony.)

JULIETTE: You could have used the door.

ANGUTI: It wouldn't be that dramatic. I had to see you again.

JULIETTE: Haven't you ever heard of Facebook?

ANGUTI: Juliette, stop these games. I've never seen such beauty in my life.

JULIETTE: And I've never known such feelings.

ANGUTI: Marry me.

JULIETTE: Isn't this a little fast?

ANGUTI: There's no time to waste. I was hoping to go hunting this weekend.

JULIETTE: I should be smart, get an education and then make an informed choice, but what the hell? Aap, ja, yes, Anguti, jeg elsker dig, ogsa! I'll marry you!

(ANGUTI and JULIETTE hug happily.)

ANGUTI: No time to waste. Tomorrow at noon near Pisiffik. I'll get my friend Friar Laurence to marry us.

JULIETTE: Tomorrow it is, but you'd better go.

(ANGUTI climbs down from balcony.)

JULIETTE: You're cute, but next time, use the door.

ANGUTI: Good night, good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow,
I shall say good night until it's tomorrow.

FRIAR LAURENCE: You're only teenagers. You we're in love with Orsina yesterday. Wisely and slow. Those who run fast, stumble.

NURSE: I told them, Friar Laurence, but they wouldn't listen!

ANGUTI: Orsina was a girl. I love Juliette.

JULIETTE: And I love Anguti.

FRIAR LAURENCE: Very well. Maybe your marriage will bring peace to Nuuk. Come stand before me.

(ANGUTI and JULIETTE stand before FRIAR LAURENCE. NURSE stands to the side.)

FRIAR LAURENCE: Do you, Juliette Kleist, take Anguti Johansen to be your lawful and wedded husband, to love and to cherish, and to respect for all your life?

JULIETTE: I do.

FRIAR LAURENCE: Do you, Anguti Johansen, take Juliette Kleist, to be your lawful and wedded wife, to love and to cherish, and to respect for all your life?

ANGUTI: I do.

FRIAR LAURENCE: By the powers vested in me by Nuuk Kommunea, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.

TYBALT: Anguti, the love I bear thee can afford no better term than this: thou art a villain.

ANGUTI: Villain am I none therefore. Farewell. I won't fight you.

(ANGUTI walks away.)

MERCUTIO: Why won't you fight him, Anguti? O calm, dishonourable, vile submission! I'll fight him myself!

TYBALT: You are a coward, Anguti, but I will fight Mercutio!

(TYBALT and MERCUTIO fight. ANGUTI tries to part them and MERCUTIO is wounded. ANGUTI holds MERCUTIO.)

(He attacks TYBALT. TYBALT and ANGUTI sword fight. ANGUTI stabs TYBALT and kills him.)

ANGUTI: What have I done?

(MAYOR enters.)

JULIETTE: OH NO!

NURSE: Wait! There's more! Your father has decided that you'll marry Paris.

JULIETTE: Paris!?!? I love Anguti! And Paris has bad breath!

NURSE: The worst, but that's life. If I were you, I'd forget Anguti and marry Paris. There doesn't seem to be much hope.

JULIETTE: I won't marry Paris. I'm going to see Friar Laurence and see what he can do!

NURSE: You go, girl, but that boy is as good as dead!

(NURSE exits, stage right.)
(JULIETTE runs around stage in panic.)

JULIETTE Friar Laurence! Friar Laurence!

(FRIAR LAURENCE enters, stage left.)

JULIETTE: Friar Laurence! Anguti has been sent to Tasilaq and I have to marry Paris!

FRIAR LAURENCE: Yes, I heard. Maybe you should have gone to college after all, huh?

JULIETTE: College!?! I can't even think right now. What should I do?!?

FRIAR LAURENCE: We need a plan. I know what to do! We'll give you a fake poison. It'll make you look like you're dead but you'll only be sleeping.

JULIETTE: POISON! I can't even drink Faxe Kondi without getting sick!

FRIAR LAURENCE: True love is worth it. After you drink the potion, you're family will bury you. I'll write Anguti and tell him to get you. It just might work.

JULIETTE: I hope so. I really look horrible in black!

In other news tonight, Juliette, from the House of Kleist, is to be married to Paris within the next two days. Preparations are under way. Now, over to our reporter outside the House of Kleist.

(light shines from PRESENTER to REPORTER and JULIETTE'S house.)

REPORTER: Yes, preparations are under way despite the death of Tybalt. Juliette looks horrible and not like the happy bride-to-be!

(JULIETTE enters, stage right.)

(FRIAR LAURENCE enters, stage left. He tries to run away from REPORTER.)

REPORTER: Friar Laurence! Friar Laurence! Can we talk to you? What's the story with Anguti and Juliette?

FRIAR LAURENCE: I saw Juliette and gave her a potion. It'll make people think she's dead, but she's not. I can't talk any more. I have to get to the post office. I'm sending Anguti a letter!

(FRIAR LAURENCE runs off, stage left.)
(Fade to black.)

NARRATOR: However, Anguti does not receive the letter telling him of the plan. Instead, he hears Juliette has died. He buys some poison and heads to the crypt.
